Music Lessons for Seniors: Cognitive Benefits + Personal Connections

While some may think of various musical instrument lessons as only being for kids, this couldn't be further from the truth. Every age group can benefit from both listening to and playing music regularly, and one group that may find particular benefits from music lessons is seniors and those who are reaching retirement age.

At Arts Academy, we're proud to offer quality music lessons to clients of all ages throughout Utah, from piano and guitar lessons to voice lessons, violin lessons and many others. There are absolutely no age limitations on who can enjoy our programs, including older adults. In this two-part blog series, we'll go over some of the numerous reasons why music and music lessons are often ideal for seniors and older people.

Great Brain Exercise

Both listening to and learning how to play music are fantastic forms of brain exercise. Listening to music is very good for the mind because it stimulates different parts of the brain that may otherwise not get used during daily life or routine activities. While there are many ways for seniors to workout their brains, playing an instrument provides them with yet another way to keep both their minds and hands active and healthy, which can make a real difference as they age.

Cognitive Benefits

Down similar lines, many forms of research have shown direct links between playing a musical instrument and an improvement in senior's cognitive skills. In many instances, the effects have been shown to be long-standing, with some studies indicating that there may be benefits up to five years after beginning their study!

While the reasons for this are still being researched, it's believed that they trace back to the fine motor skills that are required to play an instrument. Playing a guitar, violin or any other instrument is an excellent way for seniors to work on their dexterity and coordination, both of which are important as they age.

Connections With Others

Music is also a wonderful way to create and maintain connections with other people, including family members and friends of all ages. Whether they're playing music together at home, performing live on stage or simply enjoying a song from the radio, seniors have numerous opportunities to connect with others through music - these connections can be invaluable as you age.

This is especially valuable for seniors who deal with issues like loneliness or isolation, which can become a serious problem when one is in their golden years. By playing music with family and friends or joining in on community performances such as concerts or recitals, seniors can easily feel more connected to the world around them and avoid feelings of loneliness.
